Observations of the J equals one to zero line of HCN measured toward six positions in nearby low-temperature clouds are reported. The measured relative intensities of the hyperfine components of the line are anomalous in that the F equals zero to one transition is stronger than would be expected if all three components had equal excitation temperatures. Differences of approximately 20 percent in the populations per sublevel of J equals one could account for the observations. The results are in contrast to the situation observed in warmer molecular clouds associated with H II regions where the F equals one to onyline is anomalously weak. The apparent overpopulation of J equals one, F equals zero in dark clouds may be related to the phenomenon observed in the J equals one to zero transitions of HCO(+) and HNC in the same objects where the C-13 substituted version of these species is found to be stronger than the C-12 species.
