Advances made over the last four years in the study of hydromagnetic waves in the magnetosphere are reviewed. Observations of waves at or around the ion gyrofrequency (pc 1) and the theoretical work developed to understand these observations are discussed with particular emphasis on the role of heavy ions. Observational and theoretical studies of the resonance structure of waves with frequencies far below the ion gyrofrequency (wavelength comparable to geomagnetic field lines) are considered, along with studies of wave-particle interactions and solar-wind influences on the magnetic pulsations. Studies on pi 2 pulsations, associated with substorm intensifications or onset are also discussed, and work on the intentional and unintentional stimulation of ULF waves, and on data analysis techniques for the extraction of wave parameters from the irregular signals received is indicated.
