Observation of H-alpha emissions in the polar clefts, obtained at Heiss Island and Longyearbyen, are analyzed. The influence of Rayleigh scattered sunlight on detection of H-alpha and H-beta emissions is studied. Narrow H-alpha profiles of dayside aurora in the wavelength region of 6554-6569 A, dayside cleft auroral spectrum in the wavelength range of 5850-6580 A, and board nightside aurora emissions profile are presented. A comparison of nightside and dayside proton precipitation reveals the nightside precipitation is more energetic than dayside proton precipitation; therefore, board emission profiles are characteristic of high energy primary precipitation. The ability of low energy protons to generate H-alpha emissions is investigated.
