The outgassing of H2O gives rise to repulsive forces among the fragments of splitting icy comets. In the present paper, on the basis of a simple hydrodynamic model, it is shown that these pressure forces are capable of producing the initial velocities of separation of the fragments apparent in comet West. Allowance is made for the dust swept out with the gas and for sublimation-condensation processes at exposed and shaded surfaces.
