Transversal instability of a liquid meniscus, formed in a narrow gap between two immiscible fluids, while advancing in a normal to the interface direction, is concerned. A hydrodynamic model of the spatiotemporal evolution of the meniscus is developed. The analysis of the obtained non-linear equation, describing the interface dynamics, has resulted in the evaluation of the velocities of the dominant wave processes. The dispersion equations for the linear waves are studied quantitatively. The theory is expected to serve to further studies of the phenomenon.
