The Huygens probe is designed for the in situ exploration of the atmosphere of Titan down to its surface and for low altitude remote observation of the surface. While not a design requirement, the probe may survive impact with the surface and return science data. The anticipated behavior of the probe at and after impact is described and a preliminary assessment is made of the range of duration of the surface mission. Interactions of the probe with the surface are considered and some of the possible mechanisms for termination of the mission are described.
