The debate over the cause of mass extinction 66 million years ago, when the last of the dinosaurs died out, is discussed. Data from sediment between the rock of the Cretaceous period and that of the Tertiary period has been analyzed to study whether the extinction was caused by extremely powerful volcanic eruptions or by a large asteroid or comet impact. It is suggested that the evidence supports the impact hypothesis.
