The Medium-Deep Survey is a Key Project designed to increase the overall efficiency of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) with its unique properties of UV sensitivity, high resolution and low background. Deep multicolor images with the Wide Field/Planetary Camera or UV images with the Faint Object Camera are taken in parallel mode, when the other detector is being used on a primary target at single pointing extending over two or more orbits. In addition to the great potential for serendipitous discoveries, the parallel data are needed to undertake a number of scientifically important programs, both in Galactic and extra-galactic astronomy. In particular, we concentrate on areas ranging from the evolution of galaxies to Galactic structure, and on serendipitous searches for objects of unusual color and/or morphology (see accompanying posters). Follow up spectroscopic observations are being done from large ground-based telescopes. This large astronomical database with both HST and ground based data for a random sample of galaxies and stars at high galactic latitude will be modeled and statistically analyzed. Observations are ongoing since January 1992 and a sample of observations are presented.
