The Charge Transfer Efficiency (CTE) Working Group at STScI was created as a forum to study and discuss theeffects of CTE loss on HST CCDs. This report is the first publication detailing our progress. It represents theInstituteÕs current (as of early 2001) understanding of the effects of CTE degradation due to radiation damage. Wereview the causes of CTE loss, present the results of monitoring of the WFPC2 and STIS CCDs and discuss themeans by which future CCD instruments, ACS and WFC3 will address CTE. We also look at the scientific impactsof CTE degradation, presenting several examples from WFPC2 and STIS.
