Recent observations of the tip of the Magellanic Stream with the Arecibo telescope have revealed very clumpy morphology of this gaseous tidal tail. We show that thermal instability, with a typical timescale of a few Myrs to a few hundreds of Myrs, can result in fragmentation of a warm tail of gas trailing through the Galactic Halo, and therefore naturally explain the formation of small, cool HI clouds. If the observed clumpiness at the tip of the Stream is primarily due to thermal instability, the characteristic size of thermal fragments allows us to place a limit on the age of the Magellanic Stream and the distance to its tip.
