A version of the method of the effective Lagrangian is proposed, which in the solution of self-consistent problems about the vacuum polarization of matter fields by an isotropic gravitational field is more efficient than the known Schwinger-de Witt method. The basic result presented here is the calculation of polarization corrections of fourth order with respect to the curvature of space-time and its derivative for scalar and vector fields with non-zero rest mass.
