The two Faraday cup instruments on the Wind spacecraft measure proton and alpha particle reduced distribution functions for the Solar Wind Experiment. During a single three second rotation of the spacecraft each cup records the flux of particles within a fixed energy window along twenty angles. A full spectrum consists of measurements made in 20 to 30 energy windows and takes from 60 to 92 seconds to complete. We present a technique for extracting proton velocity, thermal speed and number density using data observed during a single spacecraft spin. This results in an order of magnitude increase in the rate at which the solar wind plasma key parameters are determined. As an application of this high resolution data we compare observations of interplanetary phenomena made at the standard 92 second rate. In particular we examine the internal structure of interplanetary shocks and the effect of 3 seconds plasma data on shock parameters when combined with 3 second magnetic field data from the MFI instrument.
