By means of a Fabry-Tilting Filter Spectrophotometer, high resolution observations (λ/Δλ ≃ 104) of the (3s3S0 - 3p3P) O I line at 8446 Å were carried out in the direction of Cyg OB2 No. 12, with the 182 cm Asiago telescope.
The line is of stellar origin and appears in absorption with an equivalent width of (40 ± 12) mÅ. This value is at least 25 times lower than expected from an absorption line correlated to its stellar spectral type and luminosity.
We interpret the observed small equivalent width of the 8446 Å line in Cyg OB2 No. 12 as due to the contribution from emission arising as a result of the resonant excitation of the O I 33D0 state by Ly-β photons.
