In this paper the geophysical aspects of the Italian JOSO site testing campaigns are described. JOSO is a European organization of solar physicists who try to find in the European area a site with very low atmospheric turbulence, which limits the maximum attainable resolution in solar observations from the ground. The results obtained during these site testing campaigns with ground based measurements and balloon borne radiosondes are presented.
