The class II methanol maser source G351.78-0.54 exhibits irregular flares at 6.7-GHz with a time-scale of 2-3 months. Single-dish monitoring shows progressive flaring as a function of velocity across one of the maser features. The proposed explanation of this behaviour invokes a linear structure in the masers, which may be amplifying a disturbance from e.g. a clumpy outflow, or experiencing a shock in the masing region. High angular and spectral resolution imaging of the masers is required to explain the sequential flaring and gain insight into the nature of the methanol maser.
