High-redshift radio galaxies are unique laboratories for studying the formation and evolution of the most massive galaxies in the early universe. Ultra-steep spectrum (USS) selection is an effective way of identifying massive galaxies at high redshift. We have obtained radio and near-infrared images for over 300 USS galaxies in the southern hemisphere, and are now conducting the first comprehensive study of their environments. In this proposal we plan to obtain high-resolution 6 and 3 cm polarimetric images of a subset of 50 sources from our USS sample to determine the physical conditions in the medium surrounding these powerful radio galaxies.
