Laser extraction of SO 2 from natural sulphide minerals provides a high precision, spatially resolved technique for 34 S analysis. Precision of better than 0.25%. (1 ) can be achieved and a resolution of 0.25 mm during our experiments was limited by the sample size required by the mass spectrometer. Sulphur isotopes ( 34 S / 32 S ) were fractionated by between 0 and 8%. during laser combustion. Fractionation is related to the metal/sulphur bond strength; it is thus mineral specific and reproducible. Analysis of a galena vein 25 mm wide is discussed to illustrate the advantages offered by this technique.
