We applied waveform cross-correlation (WCC) to a selected set of 153 volcano-tectonic (VT) earthquakes that occurred at Mount Pinatubo from 30 May through 3 June, 1991, to determine improved relative P-wave arrival times and locations. Simultaneous inversion for hypocenters and velocity model parameters using the refined arrival times resulted in extremely low arrival time misfits and well-constrained relative earthquake locations. Pre-eruption earthquakes from this time period occurred in two groups: a shallow group located almost directly below the Mount Pinatubo summit, at depths of 2-4km, and a deeper group located 3-5km northwest (NW) of the summit, at depths of 3-7km. We found that most off-summit earthquakes in this time period occurred along a plane dipping approximately 60° and striking approximately 60°E of north. This feature may have been a fault reactivated by Mount Pinatubo's magmatic activity. The previously diffuse summit cluster collapsed from a cloud to a narrow, roughly linear feature, accompanied by a separate, shallower group of events. These features were not visible in previous studies of Mount Pinatubo seismicity, indicating the importance of high-precision arrival time picks for interpreting volcano seismicity.
