We combine finite field approach with the configuration interaction (CI) method and many-body perturbation theory (MBPT) to perform accurate calculations of isotope shift for many electron atoms and ions. The main goal of the calculations is to study the effect of possible different abundances of isotopes in early universe on the observed anomalies of the quasar absorption spectra. Current best interpretation of the anomalies is the assumption that the fine structure constant alpha was smaller at early epoch.
