The numerical modeling techniques used to predict the exposure of spacecraft to high-energy particles from the earth's radiation belts are examined in an analytical review. Particular attention is given to factors affecting the transport, injection, and loss of trapped energetic electrons, represented in terms of diffusion in phase space. Results from analyses of data from SCATHA airborne measurements during a period of moderate belt activity (Reagan et al., 1981 and 1983; Davidson et al., 1988) are presented in extensive graphs and characterized in detail. The model predictions are shown to be in good agreement with available measurement data, and the applicability of the present techniques to the planned Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite project is indicated.
