Under violent astrophysical conditions such as supernovaeexplosions, intense fluxes of neutrinos can drive a novel class of plasmainstabilities: the electroweak versions of the standard electron andphoton driven forward scattering or streaming instabilities. Employing therelativistic kinetic equations for the neutrinos interacting with plasmavia the weak interaction force we explore the different collective plasmainstabilities driven by neutrinos. We examine the anomalous energytransfer between the neutrinos and the background plasma via electronplasma waves. (Neutrino streaming instability) and the generation ofquasi-static B fields (electroweak Weibel instability). Landau damping ofplasma waves by neutrinos as a possible neutron star cooling mechanism isalso considered. The relevance of the electroweak plasma instabilities forthe extreme conditions occurring in supernovae, gamma ray bursts is pointedout. We point out the important role these instabilities play inre-energizing the stalled shock in type II supernovae.
