A model configuration of low-frequency (compared to ion cyclotron) arbitrary-beta modes is developed for a system with a two-component (hot and cold) inhomogeneous plasma and a straight inhomogeneous magnetic field, which is appropriate for storm time plasmas near the geomagnetic equator. The stability properties of three modes are examined in detail for the drift-compressional mode, the firehose mode, and the drift mirror mode. The results of this model are compared to those of earlier models and to one observed event.
