A theoretical study of the effects of ion inertia on high-altitude (approximately 450 km) barium cloud striation is presented. The study of the gradient drift instability for F region plasma clouds indicates that at high altitudes the ion inertia terms are not small in comparison with the ion-neutral collision frequency. For specified conditions, the growth rate is shown to be approximately equal to the square root of the product of the usual term for growth rate and the ion-neutral collision frequency. It is assumed that the ion gyrofrequency is greater than ion inertial time changes.
