Mercury-zinc-tellurium (MZT) properties are presently evaluated in light of Zn-Te bond-related stability considerations. By contrast with mercury-cadmium-tellurium, direct crystal growth of MZT is possible by means of THM. Lower interdiffusion coefficients are found through interdiffusion experiments whose results are interpreted by introducing a large term of interaction between cations. Higher surface stability and superior bonding strength are demonstrated, and outstanding implanted IR photodiode devices are obtained with MZT.
