The detection and characteristics of Herbig Ae and Be stars are described. The selection criteria proposed by Herbig for these stars with a mass of 53 solar masses and an age of about 50 Myr are presented. About 60 Herbig Ae and Be stars have been detected in the northern and southern hemispheres. Line profiles and HR diagrams for the stars are provided, and their emission and absorption structure are analyzed. The wind and jets, angular-momentum conservation, and formation of the Herbig Ae and Be stars are discussed. The existence of a dust shell and disks in the Herbig Ae and Be stars is investigated using photometric obervations in the IR. It is noted that the Herbig Ae and Be stars are characterized by variability and the existence of an expanding shell and dust disks.
