Heos 2 plasma measurements in the distant polar magnetosphere have revealed a plasma layer (designated the plasma mantle) of varying thickness adjacent to and inside the magnetopause tailward from the polar cusp region. The mantle is normally absent equatorward of the polar cusp region. It is also lacking where the plasma sheet is adjacent to the magnetopause. Its thickness varies from 0.5 to over 4 earth radii and is independent of position over that portion of the magnetopause where the mantle is usually present. The flow speed lies between 100 and 200 km/s, and its direction is antiparellel to the local magnetic field; it is positively correlated with the flow speed in the magnetosheath and solar wind. A narrow band (0.1 to 0.2 earth radii) of low-density and/or low-flow-speed plasma is observed between the mantle and the magnetopause. The protons in the mantle are cooler along the magnetic field vector than perpendicular to it; this results in a broad, flat angle distribution peaking 45 deg from the field direction.
