Processes affecting the surface helium abundance of low and intermediate mass stars are briefly reviewed. The first, second, and third dredge-ups are described, as is the envelope burning process. Prerequisites for stars to participate in these phases are mentioned, and element production during them is discussed. Synthetic models making use of these phases are briefly considered.
