Evidence of helium abundance variations among open clusters obtained from the study of helium line spectra of young stars and from the ZAMS locations of clusters in the c(1), (b-y) and c(0), beta diagrams is discussed. The inferred helium-to-hydrogen variations are quite large at 0.06, corresponding to a helium abundance variation of 0.10. Young clusters situated 1 to 2 kpc away in the outer parts of the galaxy have a lower helium abundance than clusters in the solar neighborhood. Suggestions for further studies of these possible helium abundance variations using the ESO CASPEC instrument are given.
