The Helios Occultation Experiment (radio science: S band time delay measurements) is presented. Typical Doppler, range, and electron content measurements made during three solar occultations at heliocentric distances greater than three solar radii, allowing for remote sensing of solar coronal and interplanetary plasma up to Earth orbit (within ecliptic plane), are considered. Favorable aspects of the Helios orbital geometry and remote sensing technique are reported and estimates of accuracy of measurements are given. Results of scientific data analysis pertain to: derivation of a steady state, spherically symmetric (equatorial) coronal plasma model; investigations of wavelike phenomena of electron content measurements; electron density distribution by inversion of time delay data; speed analysis of plasma disturbances in the turbulent corona; and discussion of specific solar events.
