A description is presented of results showing the mean Doppler velocity and accompanying power spectra of the afternoon/evening diffuse radar aurora observed on a 53.5-MHz radar operating at Slope Point, New Zealand. The important parameters include a frequency of 53.5 MHz, a pulse length of 67 microseconds, a two-way antenna beamwidth to half-power of 4.1 deg, and an antenna azimuth of 180 deg geographic. Attention is given to the height effect in mean Doppler velocity, power spectra, the influence of the vertical electron density gradient, and a comparison with previous observations. The presented results reveal a number of new and previously unsuspected features of 3-m irregularities in the radar aurora which cannot be explained at present.
