A brief description is presented of the Vela program which consisted in observations of about 400 stars of spectral type B in connection with studies of the spatial distribution of the interstellar dust in the direction of the constellation Vela. The investigation was conducted at the European Southern Observatory at La Silla in Chile during the time from 1975 to 1977. Ten variable stars were observed during the investigation. All variable stars with one exception were found to be eclipsing binaries with short periods. The one exception is related to the star HD 80383. The observed light characteristics leave hardly any doubt that HD 80383 has to be classified as a Beta-Cephei variable.
