The results of hard X-ray/soft gamma-ray observations of GX 339-4 with GRANAT/SIGMA are reported. The spectral and temporal properties of the source during its four successive hard X-ray outbursts in 1990-1994 were studied in details. We suggest that the mechanism of GX 339-4 outbursts is triggering of the irradiation - driven instability in the low mass binary system.
