ABSTRACT In geology we can infer from the minerals present what type of rock we are observing. Most surfaces in the solar system are covered by regolith, a ne grained product of rock comminution and different kinds of erosion so that we almost never observe a real bedrock. Using the Hapke theory and Hapke's attempt to model the space weathering effect, we analyse near-infrared re ectance spectra from the SIR-1 instrument, together with measurements from the UVVIS and NIR cameras of the Clementine mission to identify the minerals and thus the rocks. The modeling approach will be explained and results for some SIR spectra with prominent features will be given.
