We propose to observe two nearby starburst galaxies, NGC 5253 and NGC 3256, in the hydrogen recombination line H40alpha (99.02 GHz). Our aim is to establish a linear correlation between the massive star formation rate (SFR) in these galaxies with the line luminosity. There are good theoretical reasons for expecting mm-wavelength recombination lines to show a better correlation with the SFR than cm-wavelength lines, namely a low level of stimulated emission and optically thin line emission. Moreover, unlike UV or optical lines, mm-wavelength lines do not suffer from dust extinction. To-date only three galaxies have been detected using mm recombination lines, which makes it impossible to confirm an indicative correlation seen from the available data. The proposed ATCA observation will help towards establishing the role of mm recombination lines as a robust star-formation indicator, and possibly set path for further future observation.
