Model calculations of the H Lyman-alpha intensity of Neptune performed prior to the Voyager encounter are compared with the upper limit based on the IUE measurements reported by Clarke (1988). They suggest that the eddy diffusion coefficient at the homopause is greater than 500,000 sq cm/s and that the upper atmosphere of Neptune may be more akin to that of Jupiter and Saturn than that of Uranus where K is less than or equal to 10,000 sq cm/s . This suggests that Lyman-alpha subsolar intensities that will be observed by the Voyager UVS instrument will be less than or equal to 520 R.
