On the basis of analysis of on- and off-bands H alpha filtergrams it is shown that (1) at least 82% of flares are preceded by spatially correlated H alpha off-band pre-flare activities, (2) these activities can be divided into two groups: one starts less than a few min and the other starts more than 30 min before the flare, (3) in the case of material ejection, the ejection always starts in the off-band prior to the H alpha on-band ejection and prior to the flare with the above mentioned time scales, and (4) the difference in time scale can be attributed to the difference in the local magnetic field conditions as shorter pre-flare activities are always associated with the vortex structure.
