Aspherical diffraction gratings have been produced by the dioptric elasticity method. These gratings find use in mountings characterized by a small number of surfaces, a fast aperture ratio, and a wide wavelength range. The gratings can be designed to compensate for spherical aberration as well as coma or astigmatism. Tests of a wide field mounting that compensates for spherical aberration are described. This mounting can be used as an objective grating or in a slit stellar or nebular spectrograph.
