Results are reported for observations of the amount of H-alpha emission from the disks of 53 galaxies with mean major diameters less than 3 arcmin. A correlation between B-V color and H-alpha emission is found whereby bluer galaxies of a given morphological type have greater emission in H-alpha. It is shown that the H-alpha emission originates from discrete ordinary H II regions ionized by starlight and that the amount of emission depends on the proportion of hot to cool stars, rather than on the availability of gas. The number of H II regions required to produce the observed emission is compared with the number of H II regions in galaxies of various morphological types measured directly from photographs taken with H-alpha interference filters. The ratio of hot stars to cool ones corresponding to the observed range in B-V color is determined and found to agree well with a theoretical model that predicts B-V color as a function of stellar luminosity in a galaxy.
