Scattering of light from stars in their atmospheres and in clouds containing a magnetic field will induce linear and circular polarization of the continuum. Stars with B about 1-10 gauss should exhibit intrinsic linear polarization of about 0.1-0.2%. For stars with B less than 1 or B greater than 10 gauss the linear polarization becomes small; circular polarization will be appreciable only if B is greater than 10 to the 5th gauss. Spatial segregation of specularly asymmetric grains in a circumstellar envelope could, however, generate circular polarization in radiation traversing the envelope.
