The Ariel-6 medium energy instrument observed GX 339-4 (1658-48) in 1979
and 1981 and found the source in the high and low states respectively.
The spectra in both states are best fitted by power-laws, of photon
index -4.5 in the high state and -1.5 in the low state. The total X-ray
output for the two states is very similar.
