Magnetization measurements of one phosphorite nodule from off New Zealand and two nodules from off Peru were performed on their thin slices. The results reveal the presence of very weak and rather stable magnetizations, and of both normal and reversed polarity intervals in two samples. The generally localized distributions of the natural remanent magnetization directions imply that these nodules should have only slightly shaken centering a certain axis but cannot have frequently turned over during their growth. The recording of magnetic reversals in two of three phosphorite nodules, thus, is not the result of diametrically turning over, suggesting that these two nodules may have started to form in the Matuyama reversed polarity chron. The average long-term accretion rates of the two nodules from off New Zealand and off Peru are estimated to be at least 0.01 mm and 0.036 mm per 1000 years, respectively.
