The polarization electrojet phenomenon is examined with reference to ground-based observations at Leningrad and satellite data. The geomagnetic effect of the polarization electrojet can be observed at subauroral latitudes in the form of positive perturbations in the H-component of the field, the intensity and duration of these perturbations being determined by the latitudinal localization of the jet and by the magnitude of the electric field. During more active periods, when the auroral oval extends to midlatitudes, the magnetic perturbations at latitudes 55-57 degrees result not only from the effect of strong electric fields but from the increased conductivity of the ionosphere at these latitudes.
