Polarimetry has become ubiquitous at solar research observatories as it allows for broader diagnostics of the solar atmosphere than possible using intensity alone, especially of magnetic fields. Despite the wide use of polarimeters, accurate polarization measurements are challenging due to requirements for high spatial, spectral, temporal, and polarimetric resolution, observations through a turbulent atmosphere, polarization of telescope optics, and necessity of operating over a wide range of wavelengths. This paper touches on the development of techniques used at ground-based solar observatories to address these challenges, reviews inherent limitations of various polarization measurement techniques, and attempts to forecast technologies that may be appropriate in the future.
