The use of the Grazing Incidence Solar Telescope (GRIST) for observing nonsolar celestial sources in the EUV is discussed. GRIST consists of a Wolter type-II telescope and two focal plane spectrographs: one spectrograph uses normal-incidence optics and is stigmatic; the second spectrograph uses a single concave grating in grazing incidence and is astigmatic. The maximum distance for source detection is computed in detail, and results show GRIST to be useful for EUV studies of hot evolved stars at medium resolution, and for far-UV studies of the interstellar medium at high resolution. Observations at wavelengths greater than 912 A show that by properly selecting a target star, high resolution probing of the interstellar medium can be achieved to distances ranging from several hundred parsec to several tens of kilo parsec. This may help to determine abundances of elements in the local galactic medium and perhaps even in nearby intergalactic space.
