Understanding the fundamental processes that take place throughout the solar system requires a research programme on an international scale. International Heliophysical Year, launched on 19 February this year, aims to bring this research area to centre-stage and provide a focus and a co-ordinated approach. Here I describe the aims and approaches of UK scientists in this international arena.
