We present the unusual optical lightcurves for GRB070529 and GRB071003, obtained with the AEOS Burst Camera (ABC) mounted on the AEOS telescope. Several hours of data were acquired for each burst, starting less than 10 minutes after the GRB was detected by Swift. The small plate scale and deep sensitivity of the ABC were very important for imaging these bursts as GRB070529 was in a densely crowded field, and GRB071003 was about 7 arc seconds away from a 10th magnitude star. Both lightcurves exhibit behavior that is atypical for GRB optical afterglows.
The GRB070529 optical lightcurve shows evidence of a reverse shock. Reverse shocks have only been seen for a very few number of bursts, most notably GRB 990123. Unlike GRB990123, this burst was not very bright, either in gamma rays or optical wavelengths. For this burst, we have XRT data at similar times as the ABC data. The XRT data during this time range is fit by a broken power law, which is not what you would expect for a reverse shock.
GRB071003 has an optical lightcurve that is well fit by a broken power law. First, it fades like a power law, with a slope of roughly -1.9. After 2000 seconds, the optical afterglow remains at a fixed magnitude for nearly an hour. The flattening of the light curve is what makes this GRB unique. Unfortunately, there is no early XRT data for this burst.
For both of these bursts, we attempt to explain their behavior in terms of the fireball model.
