The relationship between gravity wave saturation and eddy diffusion in the middle atmosphere is discussed. An effort is made to identify specific gravity wave parameters which would be useful in quantitative predictions of the effects of gravity waves on eddy transport. Emphasis is given to the following: the variation of wave spectra with time; the velocity spectra of eddy diffusivities; the isotropic characteristics of diffusivity; and the relationship between eddy diffusion and wave dissipation. A saturation theory is developed in order to calculate the globally-averaged height profile for vertical diffusivity in the middle atmosphere. The calculation shows that gravity waves are a major contributor to eddy diffusion at heights of 40-110 km, and that they remain powerful influences at altitudes as low as 20 km. Some areas for future research are identified.
