We employ the principle of equivalence to adapt Schwinger's special relativistic form of the Larmor radiation formula to calculate the radiation emitted by a charge at rest in a gravitational field [1]. To account for the radiation emitted by a quasar, we picture the radiation as emanating from a thin shell of charge surrounding a massive body. The luminosity is expressed in terms of the body's Schwarzschild radius and the thickness and density of the charged shell. Using observed values of quasar luminosity, we obtain limiting conditions on the quasar mass and extent. 1. L. Motz, Il Nuovo Cimento \underline9B, 77 (1972).
