The viability of a gravitational theory depends on it being a complete, self-consistent and relativistic theory with the correct Newtonian limit. Two classes of gravitation theories are reviewed: metric theories and nonmetric theories. Individual post-Newtonian coefficients or parameters, called the parametrized post-Newtonian formalism, are discussed which are used to study the metric theories of gravity. Two experiments used to test the viability of nonmetric gravitational theories, the Eotvos experiment and the gravitational redshift, are outlined. Additional prospects for the testing of gravitational theories is included. Results indicate that the measurement of the perihelion shifts in the orbits of Mercury and other planets, the resolution of the problem of the oblateness of the sun, and the laser-ranging measurements of the distance between the earth and the moon play a major role in testing scalar-tensor theories.
