Elementary particle grand unification theories consider the possibility of very massive magnetic monopoles, but standard cosmology indicates an excessive number of poles. Massive monopoles are affected by gravity and magnetism, necessitating a reassessment of current monopole searches. Monopoles inside the earth could annihilate with each field reversal, producing an additional internal heat; this view is applied to the estimation of an upper limit for the monopole-to-baryon ratio at accretion of 10 to the -28th.
